چکیده

T oday, the pulmonary epithelium is generally accepted to possess unique properties that go far beyond the role as a mere physical barrier protecting an organism’s interior against the detrimental effects exerted by airborne environmental challenges, such as gases, particles, allergens or microorganisms. The specific tasks respiratory epithelial cells have to fulfil differ along the bronchiotracheal tract down to the alveoli [1, 2]. Accordingly, there is a continuous change in the cellular composition of the epithelium along the airway tract reflecting remarkable structural and functional differentiation. Besides long-known roles of the epithelium, such as mucociliary clearance, lung fluid balance and surfactant homeostasis, which assure the removal of particles and cells, the avoidance of oedema and the proper adjustment of surface tension, respectively, are additional important functions that have been identified in recent years related to the regulation of innate and adaptive immune responses [3–6].

Effect of thalidomide on the alveolar epithelial cells in the lung fibrosis induced by bleomycin in mice

Introduction: Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a relentlessly progressive and usually fatal lung disease of unknown etiology for which no effective treatments currently exist. In the adults type I and II pneumocytes, forms Components of the alveolar epithelial cells. In this study, we investigated the effect of thalidomide on the alveolar epithelial cells (type I and II pneumocytes) in ...

Initial observations on the effect of medium composition on the differentiation of murine embryonic stem cells to alveolar type II cells.

The pluripotency and high proliferative index of embryonic stem (ES) cells make them a good potential source of cells for tissue engineering purposes. We have shown that ES cells can be induced to differentiate in vitro into pulmonary epithelial cells (type II pneumocytes) using a serum-free medium designed for the maintenance of mature distal lung epithelial cells in culture (SAGM). However, t...

Embryonic stem cells are pluripotent stem cells which have the ability to indefinitely self-renew and differentiate into all differentiated cells of the body. Regarding their two main properties (unlimited self-renewal and multi-lineage differentiation), these cells have various biomedical applications in basic research and cell based therapy. Because the transplantation of differentiated cells...

A pure population of lung alveolar epithelial type II cells derived from human embryonic stem cells.

Alveolar epithelial type II (ATII) cells are small, cuboidal cells that constitute approximately 60% of the pulmonary alveolar epithelium. These cells are crucial for repair of the injured alveolus by differentiating into alveolar epithelial type I cells. ATII cells derived from human ES (hES) cells are a promising source of cells that could be used therapeutically to treat distal lung diseases...

Differentiation of human embryonic stem cells into neurons

Human embryonic stem (ES) cells are undifferentiated pluripotent cells derived from the inner cell mass of blastocyst stage embryos. These unique cell lines have the potential to form virtually any cell type in the body and can be propagated in vitro indefinitely in an undifferentiated state. These cells are capable of forming embryoid bodies (EB) that contain cells from all three embryonic lin...
